How to Use This Checklist

Pack Smart for the Morocco You're Actually Going To

Morocco isn't one climate — it's four. Marrakech can hit 40°C while the High Atlas peaks have snow, and the Sahara goes from 35°C at noon to 5°C after dark. The right packing list depends on when you're going, where you're going, and how long.

This checklist starts with the core essentials everyone needs, then adds season-specific and region-specific items on top. Tick items off as you pack — your progress saves to your browser, so you can come back to it without losing your place. You can also print the whole list for a paper backup.

Insider Advice

Six Pro Tips From 25 Years of Morocco Trips

🧳

Pack Light, Buy Local

Morocco's leather, textiles, and spices are world-class — and cheap. Leave 30% empty space in your suitcase for the things you'll inevitably buy in the souks.

🧣

The Scarf Is the MVP

One large lightweight scarf doubles as: sun cover, dust filter, mosque shoulder cover, evening warmth, beach blanket, and emergency picnic mat. Bring two.

💵

Pack Small USD/EUR Bills

$1–5 USD bills are perfect for small tips at the airport, hammams, and during your first 24 hours before you hit an ATM. Keep them separate from your main cash.

📷

Camera Settings First

Pre-set your camera to handle high-contrast scenes (white walls + blue shadow). Morocco's light is brutal at midday and gorgeous at dusk — golden hour is unmissable.

👟

Wear In Your Shoes

Medinas are uneven cobblestone — blistering brand-new shoes on day one is the most common rookie mistake. Wear your travel shoes for at least 2 weeks before departure.

💊

Bring Imodium, Not Bravado

Even healthy travellers get mild stomach upset from the water mineral difference. Imodium + electrolyte tabs in your day bag can save a whole day of sightseeing.

Packing Questions

Frequently Asked

For a 10–14 day Morocco trip, one medium suitcase (22–26 inches) plus a day backpack is plenty. A soft-shell or duffel-style bag is easier to load into vehicles than rigid hard-shell luggage, especially on Sahara routes. Always leave 25–30% empty for souvenirs — Moroccan textiles, ceramics, and leather are world-class and you will buy things.

A universal power adapter (Morocco uses European 2-pin plugs, Types C and E). North American visitors forget this constantly and end up paying $20+ at the airport for a basic adapter. Bring one with multiple USB ports built in — even better.

Most mosques in Morocco are closed to non-Muslims — the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and Tin Mal in the High Atlas are notable exceptions. For those, both men and women should cover shoulders and knees. Women receive a scarf at the entrance if needed, but bringing your own light scarf is more comfortable and respectful.

Yes — major Moroccan supermarkets (Marjane, Carrefour, Acima) and pharmacies stock most everyday toiletries. But specialty items like high-SPF sunscreen, contact lens solution, tampons, and specific medications are limited and expensive. Pack these from home.

Not necessary — every riad, hotel, and decent guesthouse provides a hairdryer in the room. If you must bring your own, ensure it's dual-voltage (110V/220V) or you'll fry it. Morocco runs on 220V; North American 110V appliances will burn out without a heavy-duty converter.

Bring $200–500 USD or EUR cash as emergency backup. The Moroccan Dirham is a closed currency (you can't get it before arrival), so plan to withdraw from an ATM at the airport or your first city. ATMs are widely available and give better rates than airport exchange counters. See our full Morocco FAQ for currency tips.
