Three ways to get from Fes to Marrakech, and only one of them is worth the days. An honest comparison of the Sahara route, the direct drive and the train — with how long each actually takes and what you give up by rushing it.
Fes and Marrakech are the two cities almost every visitor wants, and they sit about 530 km apart with the High Atlas and the Sahara in between. How you travel between them decides most of what your trip actually is. Get it right and the journey becomes the best part of the holiday. Get it wrong and you have spent a day and a half looking at the inside of a vehicle for no reason.
There are three real options. Below is what each costs you in time, what you see, and which one we build for most clients — including the case where the boring answer is the right one.
Fes → Midelt → Erfoud and Merzouga → Todra or Dades Gorge → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech. This is not a transfer, it is the trip. You cross the Middle Atlas cedar forests, come down onto the desert plateau, sleep a night in the dunes at Erg Chebbi, come back up through the gorges, and arrive in Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass having seen four completely different countries.
Four days is the honest minimum and five is more comfortable. If you only have three, we would shorten the desert leg rather than cut the gorges, because the gorges are where the driving is short and the scenery is constant.
Fes to Marrakech direct, inland via Beni Mellal, is roughly 530 km and typically seven to eight hours of actual driving. It is a legitimate choice in exactly one situation: you have a short trip, you want time in the two cities rather than between them, and you accept that the day in between is a travel day and nothing more.
What you see: agricultural Morocco, the Middle Atlas at a distance, and Beni Mellal. It is not unpleasant. It is also not a reason to be in Morocco. If this is your plan, we would usually suggest breaking it with a night at Bin el Ouidane lake or the Ouzoud waterfalls, which turns a dead day into a decent one for very little extra time.
ONCF runs a comfortable, genuinely reliable rail network, and Fes to Marrakech takes roughly seven hours with a change at Casablanca. First class is air-conditioned, reserved, and inexpensive. Morocco's high-speed line, Al Boraq, runs Tangier to Casablanca and does not serve this leg, so do not expect those speeds.
The train is a good option if you are travelling independently between the two cities and do not want a driver. Its limitation on a private tour is that it only connects the two endpoints — you cannot stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the gorges or the dunes, because none of them are on a railway. Check current schedules close to travel; timetables change seasonally.
There is no useful direct service between Fes and Marrakech for most of the year, so flying means connecting through Casablanca. Once you add the transfer to Fes airport, the check-in, the connection and the drive into Marrakech, you have often spent most of a day to save two hours over the train. Worth pricing if your schedule is very tight, but it is rarely the answer. Routes change, so we check current options when we build your itinerary.

About 530 km by the direct inland road via Beni Mellal, which is typically seven to eight hours of driving. Via the Sahara — Midelt, Merzouga, the gorges and Ait Ben Haddou — it is considerably further and takes four to five days, because it stops being a transfer and becomes the trip.
If you have ten days or more in Morocco, the southern route through the Sahara, without question. It is the single best stretch of road in the country. If you have under a week, take the train or fly and spend the time in the two cities instead — a compressed desert leg gives you the driving without the reward.
Roughly seven hours with a change at Casablanca, on ONCF. First class is air-conditioned and reserved, and it is inexpensive and reliable. Morocco's high-speed Al Boraq line runs Tangier to Casablanca and does not serve this route. Check current timetables close to your travel dates.
Yes — Fes to Merzouga via Midelt and the Ziz Valley is a long but entirely normal driving day, roughly seven to eight hours with stops. What you cannot sensibly do is Fes to Ouarzazate directly; there is no good road for it and the desert is reached from Fes via Errachidia, Erfoud and Merzouga.

Yes. The roads on this route are paved and in good condition, including the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which is a well-maintained mountain road rather than an off-road adventure. You have your own driver and vehicle throughout, we cap daily driving where you ask us to, and we stop whenever you want to.
Slightly better south from Fes, because you finish in Marrakech, which has the easier airport for onward flights and is the more forgiving city to spend your last days in. It also means the desert arrives in the middle of the trip rather than at the very end, when people are tired.
