A little history
Ras el-Ma — 'head of the water' — is the natural spring that has supplied Chefchaouen since its founding, channelled along the eastern edge of the medina where old communal washing places remain in use.
Why it matters
The spring is part of daily life, where residents still wash clothes and gather. It marks the meeting of the town and the wild green mountains above.
