Morocco Driving Times and Distances: Real Hours Between the Main Stops

Morocco looks compact on a map, but mountain passes and village roads make some legs long. These are realistic driving times between the stops on most itineraries, and the way we break up the long days so you never spend a whole holiday in the car.

Driving times between the main stops

“Map time” is the time a navigation app gives with no stops; “with stops” is what a real travel day looks like, with a coffee, a photo stop or two and lunch. Mountain roads in the Atlas and the Rif are slower than the distance suggests.

Pacing

How we split the long days

The classic Sahara loops cover a lot of ground, so we break them where the scenery is best rather than where the road happens to end:

  • Fes to the desert: through the cedar forests of Ifrane and the Middle Atlas, with lunch in Midelt, arriving at Merzouga for sunset. If you prefer shorter days we add a night on the way.
  • The desert to Marrakech: two days, not one — a night in the Todgha or Dades gorges, then the kasbahs of Skoura and Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the Atlas.
  • Marrakech to the desert: the same in reverse, never in one push.
  • The north: Chefchaouen sits nicely between Tangier or Rabat and Fes, so no day there runs past five hours.

If long drives worry you, tell us. We can shorten the route, add a night, or — when it makes sense — use the train for the long, flat legs between the Atlantic cities. See the region guides for how many nights each area deserves.

Other ways to get around

Trains and flights

Morocco’s Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier with Rabat and Casablanca, with Tangier to Casablanca taking about 2 h 10. A new high-speed line from Kenitra to Marrakech is under construction and is expected to open around 2029; until then Casablanca to Marrakech by train takes roughly 2½–3 hours, and Fes to Marrakech about 6½–7 hours.

Domestic flights are useful mainly for very short trips — for example flying back from the south to Casablanca instead of driving — and we include them in a proposal when they genuinely save time.

Good to know

Morocco Driving Times and Distances: Real Hours Between the Main Stops FAQs

To Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) it is about 535 km and 9½ hours of driving, so we always split it over two days with a night in the Dades or Todgha gorges. Erg Chigaga takes about 8 hours to M’Hamid plus 2–3 hours of off-road track.
