Fes vs Marrakech: Which Imperial City Should You Visit?

Fes and Marrakech are Morocco’s two great medina cities, and travellers often ask which to choose. The honest answer is that they are very different — Fes is older, deeper and more intense; Marrakech is warmer, more open and easier to enjoy — and most first trips are better with both.

Fes

Fes: the medieval heart of Morocco

Fes el-Bali is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world — a city of donkeys, hand carts and staircases, where tanners, coppersmiths and weavers still work much as they did centuries ago. It is home to Al-Qarawiyyin, founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859 and often described as the oldest continuously operating university in the world, and to some of the finest Merinid architecture in the country.

Fes rewards curiosity and a good guide. Without one, the maze can feel overwhelming; with one, it becomes the most fascinating day of the trip. Stay in a riad inside the walls — Palais Faraj by Bab Ziat or Riad Fès are our usual picks — and give it two full nights. Read more in our Fes and Meknes guide.

Marrakech

Marrakech: the red city

Marrakech is sunnier, more spacious and easier to love at first sight. Its medina is bigger in area than Fes’s, but flatter and simpler to walk, opening onto Jemaa el-Fna, whose storytellers and food stalls are recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Around it are palaces, gardens, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and some of the best hotels in Africa.

It is also the natural base for day trips to the High Atlas, the Agafay desert and Essaouira. Three nights is ideal. See the Marrakech guide and the riads we book.

Choosing

Which one if you only have time for one?

  • One week, first trip: Marrakech, with the High Atlas and either Essaouira or a short desert night.
  • Culture is the reason you are going: Fes, with Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis.
  • Travelling with children: Marrakech — easier streets, pools and gardens.
  • Ten days or more: both, linked by the Sahara: Fes → Merzouga → the gorges → Marrakech is Morocco’s classic route.

Getting between them takes about 5½–6 hours by the motorway via Casablanca (around 530 km) or 6½–7 hours by train. Most of our clients go the scenic way — through the desert — and turn the transfer into the highlight of the trip. Our driving-times guide shows each leg.
