A long sea bastion built by the Portuguese and later reinforced under Moroccan sultans, its cannons still aimed at the Atlantic.

Walking the rampart at dusk, the wind carries salt and the distant sound of gulls. The cannons — European-cast, some bearing the crests of their makers — line the parapet in quiet rows, pointing toward open water. Below, the medina's blue-shuttered lanes begin.
