Travelling to Morocco During Ramadan: 2027 Dates and What Changes

Ramadan is the holy month of fasting, and travelling in Morocco during it is easier — and more rewarding — than most visitors expect. Here are the expected 2027 dates, what changes day to day, and how we plan trips around it.

When is Ramadan in 2027?

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on or around 8 February 2027 and to end with Eid al-Fitr on about 9 or 10 March 2027. Morocco confirms the start and end of the month by local sighting of the new moon, so the dates can move by a day — in 2026 Morocco began a day after the astronomical prediction. Eid al-Adha (Eid el-Kbir) is expected around 16 May 2027 (Office Holidays; Government of Canada).

Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it falls in late winter, when the days are short and cool — one of the easiest times of all to travel during the fast.

Day to day

What changes for visitors

  • Hotels and riads serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to guests as usual.
  • Sights and museums stay open, sometimes with shorter afternoon hours.
  • Cafés and small restaurants in the medinas often close during the day and come alive after sunset. Restaurants in hotels and tourist areas generally stay open.
  • Alcohol is only served in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants all year; during Ramadan many smaller bars close, while larger hotels usually keep serving guests.
  • The hour before sunset is when everyone hurries home for iftar, the meal that breaks the fast — streets empty, and it is the worst hour to be on the road.
  • Evenings are the magic: families out late, sweets and harira soup everywhere, lit-up squares and a festive mood until well after midnight.
Respect

Etiquette: being a good guest

Non-Muslim visitors are not expected to fast. The courtesy is simple: avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in the street during daylight hours (the Government of Canada gives the same advice), dress a little more conservatively, and be patient if service is slower in the late afternoon. Eating in your riad, in restaurants or in the car is completely fine.

Our approach

How we plan a Ramadan trip

We schedule guided visits in the morning, when everyone is fresh, keep long drives to the early part of the day so you arrive well before sunset, and book riads and hotels with good in-house dining. Breaking the fast at sunset — in a lively square, or alongside the staff of your riad — is one of the warmest moments of any trip.

If your dates fall on Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, expect some shops and offices to close for a day or two and domestic travel to be busy; we build in a quieter day around them.
