Grand Socco

The Grand Socco is Tanger's great outdoor crossroads, where the medina meets the modern city on a broad, sloping square.

Fruit sellers, spice vendors and traders of second-hand curiosities have gathered here for generations, making it one of the most animated market squares in northern Morocco. The square takes its formal name from the date in April 1947 when a landmark speech was delivered here, though most people simply know it as the place where the city breathes.
