Saadian Tombs

A royal mausoleum sealed for centuries, the Saadian Tombs emerge from the Kasbah quarter as one of Marrakech's most quietly affecting places.

Rediscovered in the early twentieth century, the tombs shelter the remains of Saadian sultans and their courtiers within chambers of extraordinary refinement — carved stucco, Italian marble columns and intricate zellige tilework covering nearly every surface. The surrounding garden, shaded and still, gives the whole site a contemplative quality that the crowds passing through rarely manage to disturb.
