Marrakech: Where to Stay, What to See and How Long to Spend

The medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. A morning with a licensed guide covers the Koutoubia, the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace and the souks, ending at Jemaa el-Fna, whose storytellers, musicians and food stalls come alive after dark. Inside the walls, a riad gives you the medina on your doorstep: Hotel la Maison Arabe, Les Jardins de la Medina, Villa des Orangers and the design-led El Fenn are the ones we book most. For the grand palace experience, La Mamounia and the Royal Mansour are in a class of their own. Families who want space and pools often prefer the Mövenpick Mansour Eddahbi in Hivernage, a short taxi ride from the old city.

The High Atlas begins about an hour away — a day trip to Imlil and the Ourika valley are both easy days out. Essaouira is 2 h 30 west through argan country, better as an overnight. Ouzoud Falls (2 h 40) makes a long but rewarding day.

Between the sights, leave room for the city’s pleasures. A hammam ritual at La Maison Arabe — black soap, a kessa scrub and a ghassoul mask — is the best cure for a day in the souks, and after a long desert circuit we often plan a spa half-day with lunch by the pool. For something livelier, see the city’s back roads and the Palmeraie by vintage sidecar, or drive 45 minutes out to the stony hills of Agafay for quad biking at sunset.

Spring and autumn are ideal, with days in the mid-20s °C. July and August average 37–38 °C, so summer visits start early and end by a pool. Winter days are sunny and mild (about 19–20 °C) but nights fall to around 6 °C — riads with good heating matter then. Christmas and New Year are among the busiest weeks of the year.
