What private meansPrivate Morocco tours: what “private” means with us
“Private” gets used loosely in this industry. Some companies call a trip private when it is really a small group of twelve with a fixed calendar. With us the word has a narrow, checkable meaning.
- ✓Your own driver-guide — one English-speaking driver stays with you from the airport on day one to the airport on the last day, and nobody else rides with you.
- ✓Your own vehicle — an air-conditioned 4x4, minivan or Sprinter sized to your party, used only by you for the whole trip.
- ✓No strangers — the only people on your trip are the people you invited. A couple travels as two; a family of seven travels as seven.
- ✓No fixed departures — you pick the dates. We don’t sell seats on a calendar, so nothing waits for a minimum group size.
- ✓Your pace — start at 8 or at 10, stay a second night in the desert, skip a museum, add a hammam. The day bends to you, not to a coach schedule.

What private does not mean: it doesn’t automatically mean luxury, and it doesn’t mean someone at your elbow for twelve hours a day. Private Morocco tours with a driver run on a simple split of roles, and it’s worth understanding before you book, because it’s where cheap operators cut corners.
Your driver-guide: the constant
Your driver-guide is with you every day. He meets you at arrivals, handles luggage, tolls, fuel, parking and hotel check-ins, and drives the long legs between cities. He speaks English, knows the road, the lunch stops and the viewpoints, and explains what you are driving through. By day three most clients treat him as the person who makes the trip work — which is exactly the point.
Licensed city guides: the specialists
Inside the big medinas and monuments — Fes, Marrakech, Meknes and Volubilis, Rabat, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca — a licensed local guide joins you for a half or full day. Morocco regulates guiding under Law 05-12: official guides hold an accreditation from the Ministry of Tourism, in two categories — city and circuit guides, and natural-space guides for mountains and desert. We book accredited city guides for the medinas and local mountain and desert guides for treks, never the man who offers his services at the Bab Boujloud gate.
What a typical day looks like

the guided visit, or the first stretch of road, broken every 90 minutes or so for a viewpoint, a coffee or a village.

wherever you like: a roadside tagine in the Ziz valley or a proper restaurant in the medina. Most lunches are yours to choose and pay, so you are never stuck with a set menu.

Afternoon
free time in the cities, or arrival at the next hotel by mid-afternoon on driving days.

Evening
dinner on your own terms. Your driver-guide can recommend and book, or you can disappear into the medina alone.
Realistic driving times, so you can judge a route: Casablanca to Rabat is about 1.5 hours; Rabat to Fes around 3 hours, or a full day if you stop at Meknes and Volubilis; Fes to Merzouga is the long one, roughly 8 hours with stops in Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz valley; Merzouga to the Dades Gorge about 5 hours via the Todra Gorge; Ouarzazate to Marrakech about 4 hours over the Tizi n’Tichka pass.
What we tell clients to skip
The two-day Marrakech-to-Merzouga-and-back desert dash. It is sold everywhere, it is roughly 18 hours in a vehicle for one night in the dunes, and people come back tired rather than moved. We also don’t build shopping stops into your day. If you want a carpet, we’ll tell you honestly where to look; nobody on our payroll is paid to steer you into a showroom.

We want to be precise about the Fund, because it is often oversold. It is not travel insurance, and it does not cover a disappointing hotel or bad weather. It exists for the case where you paid a BC-licensed agent for travel services and did not receive them. A claim must be filed within six months of the loss, and you are expected to try your credit-card issuer and insurer first. The details are on Consumer Protection BC’s website. An honest comparisonPrivate vs group tours in Morocco
Group tours aren’t a bad product. They’re a different one. Here is how the two compare on the things clients actually ask us about.
- Price — a group tour is usually cheaper per person, especially for solo travellers. A private tour costs more for one or two people, but the gap narrows quickly for a party of four, who share one vehicle and one driver.
- Pace — a group moves at the pace of its schedule and its slowest member. A private tour moves at yours: late starts, long lunches, an extra hour in the Fes tanneries or none at all.
- Hotels — groups need large hotels with enough rooms for everyone, often on the edge of town. Private trips can use small medina riads with six or ten rooms, the places groups physically can’t fit into.
- Flexibility — group itineraries are fixed weeks in advance. On a private tour you can change tomorrow tonight: add a night, swap a city, detour to a village you read about.
- Who it suits — groups suit budget-focused solo travellers who want company. Private suits couples, families, multi-generational trips, travellers with mobility or dietary needs, and anyone who dislikes waiting on a bus.

For two or more people, a private tour is the better trip almost every time: you see more because you never wait, you sleep in better places because you are not a busload, and the day is shaped by what you actually came for.

Do I need a private driver in Morocco?＋
You don’t strictly need one — trains link Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Tangier and Marrakech well. But the desert, the Atlas passes, the Dades and Todra gorges and Ait Ben Haddou are hard to reach on public transport, and self-driving means medina parking and unmarked mountain roads. For a route that goes beyond the rail line, a private driver is the simplest, safest way to do it.
How much is a private driver in Morocco per day?＋
We price the driver-guide into the whole trip rather than as a separate day rate. Our private tours — driver-guide, vehicle, hotels, breakfasts and guided visits — start from USD $340 per person per day in Classic style, around $390 in Platinum, around $490 in Luxury and from $750 in Ultra-Luxury, two sharing. Groups of four pay less per person. Anything else is priced in your proposal.
Is a private tour worth it?＋
For two or more travellers, usually yes. You share one vehicle and driver, so the premium over a group tour is smaller than people expect, and you gain control of pace, hotels and route. For a solo traveller on a strict budget, a small-group tour can be better value. We’ll tell you honestly which fits when we see your dates and priorities.

Clients routinely add rest days, change hotel style, add a cooking class or hot-air balloon flight, plan around a wedding or rework the route entirely. Are private tours suitable for families and small groups?＋
Yes. They work well for couples, families with children, multi-generational trips and groups of friends up to around 12 people. We adjust daily driving, pick family-friendly riads, swap in activities that suit children or older travellers, and build in proper rest days. Is Morocco safe for tourists?＋
Millions visit every year, and on a private tour most practical risks — getting lost, touts, late-night taxis — largely disappear. As of September 2026, Canada advises a high degree of caution in Morocco, the same headline level it gives France, and the US rates Morocco Level 2, exercise increased caution. Check travel.gc.ca or travel.state.gov before you go.
How far in advance should I book?＋
For spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), book four to six months ahead, as the best riads and desert camps fill first. For winter or summer, two to three months is usually enough. Trips under three weeks out are possible, with fewer hotel choices.
