The best Morocco itinerary for 10 days starts in Casablanca and runs Rabat, Fes, two nights at the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, the Dades Gorge and Ait Ben Haddou, then finishes with three nights in Marrakech. Ten days in Morocco is the shortest trip that fits both the imperial cities and the Sahara without rushing, as long as the route moves in one direction and never doubles back. Below is that route day by day, a north-first version from Tangier, the hotels we book in each travel style, and prices from about USD $3,400 per person.
Seven days forces a choice between the imperial cities and the desert. Ten days removes it. That is why 10 days in Morocco is the length we recommend most often for a first visit: Fes done properly, the Sahara done properly, and three unhurried nights in Marrakech at the end.
The catch is geography. Fes is in the north, the dunes are in the south-east, Marrakech is in the south-west, so the route has to move in one line. From Casablanca we go north-east to Rabat and Fes, south over the Middle Atlas to the Sahara, west through the gorges, and over the High Atlas to Marrakech, never on the same road twice.
Two rules shape every 10-day Morocco itinerary we build. Rabat is the first stop after Casablanca, not a detour at the end. And there is no shortcut from Fes to Ouarzazate: the desert is reached through Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz valley, and Ouarzazate comes after it. Ignore this and you get nine-hour days.
Arrive, the Hassan II Mosque, then Rabat
Your driver meets you at Mohammed V airport. If energy allows, the Hassan II Mosque, which non-Muslims can enter on a guided visit. Then about 1 hour 15 minutes up the coast to Rabat. A jet-lag day; keep it light. Night 1: Riad Kalaa, in the Rabat medina.
The capital, Roman ruins and the road to Fes
The Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum. About 2 hours to Meknes for Bab el-Mansour, 40 minutes to Volubilis and its mosaic floors, then about 1 hour 15 minutes to Fes. Roughly 4 hours of driving. Night 2: Palais Faraj Suites & Spa, above the medina.
A full day in the Fes medina
A licensed guide through Fes el-Bali: the Bou Inania and Attarine medersas, the Chouara tanneries from a terrace, the Nejjarine fountain and the craft quarters. The hardest walking of the trip, and the most rewarding. Driving: none. Night 3: Palais Faraj Suites & Spa.
Over the Middle Atlas to the Sahara
The big day: about 470 km, 7 to 8 hours with stops. Ifrane, the cedar forest near Azrou and its Barbary macaques, lunch in Midelt, then the palm groves of the Ziz valley to Erfoud and Merzouga as the dunes turn orange. Tonight is a hotel, not a camp. Night 4: Riad Madu, at the edge of Erg Chebbi.
Rissani, Gnawa music and a night in the dunes
A slow morning, Rissani's market and old ksar, Gnawa musicians in Khamlia. About an hour of driving. Late afternoon, a camel ride of about an hour into the dunes (or a 4x4 to the tent door) for sunset and dinner at camp. Night 5: Madu Premium Camp.
Sunrise on the dune, then the gorges
Sunrise over the sand, then about 3.5 hours west to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where the canyon narrows between cliffs roughly 300 m high. Another hour or so to the Dades valley. About 4.5 to 5 hours of driving. Night 6: Dar Blues, in the Dades Gorge.
Kasbahs and the High Atlas crossing
Skoura's palm grove, Ouarzazate, then Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village. Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at about 2,260 m to Marrakech by late afternoon. About 6 to 7 hours with stops. Night 7: Hotel la Maison Arabe.
Palaces, souks and Jemaa el-Fna
A licensed guide for the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Medersa and the souks. Afternoon free. Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. Driving: none. Night 8: Hotel la Maison Arabe.
Free day, or the Atlas villages
The Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, a hammam and a rooftop dinner. Or about 1.5 hours to Imlil, below Toubkal, for an easy valley walk and lunch in a Berber home. Night 9: Hotel la Maison Arabe.

If Chefchaouen matters to you, do not bolt it onto Route A. Start in the north. This is our published Tangier to Marrakech in 10 days: it swaps Rabat for the blue town, joins the same Fes, Sahara and Marrakech line, and ends at Marrakech airport with no drive back to Casablanca. The trade-off: Tangier usually means a connecting flight.

Route B has one night in the dunes, not two, and here we are fine with that. Sleeping in Erfoud means you reach camp rested in the afternoon, instead of at dusk after eight hours in the car. What we push back on is one camp night straight off the Fes road.
Ten days is the shortest trip I recommend if you want both Fes and the Sahara. It works because the route never turns back on itself and the desert gets real time. Fly into Casablanca and take Route A, unless Chefchaouen is on your list; then start in Tangier. What I talk people out of is adding Essaouira too. That is a two-week trip.
March to May and late September to November suit both routes best: warm days in the cities, comfortable desert nights, a clear Atlas pass. December to February works, but desert nights drop close to freezing and the Tizi n'Tichka pass can see snow. July and August are very hot, with Marrakech averaging highs around 37 to 38°C. Month by month: the best time to visit Morocco.

Yes, 10 days is enough for a first trip that covers both the imperial cities and the Sahara: Rabat, two nights in Fes, two nights at Erg Chebbi, the Dades Gorge, Ait Ben Haddou and three nights in Marrakech. What you cannot fit comfortably is Chefchaouen and Essaouira as well; for those, plan 13 to 14 days.
Arrive in Casablanca and go Rabat, Fes, Merzouga in the Sahara, the Todra and Dades gorges, Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech. It moves in one direction, has only two long driving days and gives the desert two nights. If you fly into Tangier, swap Rabat for Chefchaouen and follow the same line south.

Casablanca, in most cases. The nonstop flights from Canada and the US land there, and starting in Casablanca puts Rabat and Fes first and Marrakech's slower pace last. If you find a good flight home from Marrakech, end there and save the 2 hour 45 minute drive back. We plan days one and ten around your actual flights.
Fes to Merzouga is about 470 km, 7 to 8 hours with stops for Ifrane, the cedar forest, lunch in Midelt and the Ziz valley. There is no sensible shortcut through Ouarzazate. If the day worries you, split it with a night in Erfoud, as our Tangier route and 11-day Exotic Morocco do.
Not straight after the drive from Fes: you arrive near sunset and leave early next morning. Two nights in Merzouga, one in a riad and one at camp, give you a slow day, a proper sunset, dinner under the stars and sunrise on the dune. One camp night works if you sleep in Erfoud the night before.
Yes, if you start in Tangier. Our Tangier to Marrakech route goes Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes, Erfoud, Merzouga, Dades and Marrakech in 10 days. Adding Chefchaouen to a Casablanca start means a long detour north and back, costing a day in Fes or the desert. With 13 or more days, you can include both Rabat and Chefchaouen.
