The best way to spend 2 weeks in Morocco is the classic loop: Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, two nights in Fes, the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, the Dades and Todra gorges, Ait Ben Haddou, three nights in Marrakech, Essaouira, and back to Casablanca. Fourteen days is the length at which Morocco stops being a race: two nights where it matters, only one long driving day, and a real day off. Below is the 14-day itinerary day by day with drive times, the hotels we book in each travel style, and what it costs, from about USD $4,760 per person.
If you have 2 weeks in Morocco, do the full loop in one direction: the imperial north first, then the Sahara, then the south, then Marrakech and the Atlantic. Casablanca in, Casablanca out. It is the route we build more than any other, and the one our 13- and 15-day journeys are based on.
The order matters. From Fes the desert is reached by one road, south through the Middle Atlas and the Ziz valley to Merzouga. From Merzouga you roll west through the gorges to Ait Ben Haddou and over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech. No backtracking, no direct Fes-to-Ouarzazate leg that looks short on a map and is not, and no zig-zag from Marrakech back to Fes.
Thirteen nights, one private driver for the whole trip, licensed local guides in Rabat, Fes, Marrakech and at Ait Ben Haddou. Drive times are driving only. The hotel named each night is the one on our published journeys; alternatives by style follow.
Land, and go straight to the capital
Your driver meets you at Mohammed V airport. About 1 hour 15 minutes to Rabat, a calmer first night than Casablanca. Evening walk in the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river. Night 1: Fairmont Residences La Marina, Rabat.
The royal capital, then the Rif
Morning with a guide: the Hassan Tower, the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Chellah. Then about 4 hours north into the Rif mountains, arriving for the late light in the blue lanes. Night 2: Dar Echchaouen, Chefchaouen.
Rome and Moulay Ismail
An early walk before the day-trippers arrive, then about 3 hours to Roman Volubilis and its mosaics, Bab el-Mansour in Meknes, and an hour on to Fes. About 5 hours of driving in all. Night 3: Palais Faraj Suites & Spa, Fes.
Fes el-Bali on foot
A full day in the medina with a guide born inside it: the Attarine Medersa, the Chouara tanneries, the Nejjarine fountain, the Mellah, the Royal Palace gates. It is the hardest walking of the trip. Driving: none. Night 4: Palais Faraj Suites & Spa.
The long day south
About 470 km and 7 to 8 hours of driving: Ifrane, the cedar forest and its Barbary macaques, the Middle Atlas to Midelt, then the palm canyon of the Ziz valley past Errachidia and Erfoud. This is the one long day of the trip, so you sleep in a hotel tonight, not a camp. Night 5: Riad Madu, Merzouga.
A desert day, then a desert night
Slow morning. Rissani's market and the old ksar, Gnawa music in Khamlia, lunch, then camels in the late afternoon into Erg Chebbi for sunset and a night in camp. About an hour of driving. Night 6: Madu Premium Camp.
The road of the gorges
Sunrise from the dunes, then about 3.5 hours west to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, and another hour or so to the Dades Gorge. About 4.5 to 5 hours of driving. Night 7: Dar Blues, Dades Gorge.
Kasbah country
About 2.5 hours west through the Valley of Roses and the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate. After lunch, 30 minutes to Ait Ben Haddou for the late-afternoon light, when the day coaches have gone. Night 8: Berbere Palace, Ouarzazate.
Over the High Atlas
About 4 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), with a detour to the Kasbah of Telouet if you want it (add about 1.5 hours). Arrive in Marrakech mid-afternoon. Night 9: Hotel la Maison Arabe, Marrakech.
The guided day
Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, El Badi, the Ben Youssef Medersa and the souks with a licensed guide, then Jemaa el-Fna at dusk. Night 10: Hotel la Maison Arabe.
The day off
Nothing booked. Most people need this day more than they expect. The Majorelle Garden, a hammam, a cooking class, or a half day in the Atlas foothills with your driver. Night 11: Hotel la Maison Arabe.
West to the Atlantic
About 2.5 to 3 hours through the argan country to Essaouira: the harbour, the ramparts, grilled fish at the port, the medina's woodworkers. Night 12: Dar L'Oussia, Essaouira.
Up the coast to the mosque
About 4.5 to 5 hours of driving, with lunch on the way. In Casablanca, the Hassan II Mosque on its platform over the Atlantic, then a last dinner by the sea. Night 13: Barceló Anfa, Casablanca.
An easy last morning
About 45 minutes to Mohammed V airport. Your last night was near the airport for exactly this reason.

Added up, that is about 38 to 40 hours of driving across two weeks, and only Day 5 goes past 6 hours. Compare that with the 7-day desert loop, which puts around 21 to 27 hours into one week (see our 7-day Morocco itinerary).

If you can find fourteen days, take them. It is the first length at which Morocco feels like a journey rather than a checklist. Your flights cost the same for one week or two; the second week is where you actually get to enjoy what they bought.

An honest note on Ultra-Luxury: Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira have true palace hotels. The desert and the gorges do not. There we book the best room or tent that exists and say so, rather than pretend.

Erg Chigaga is emptier and wilder than Erg Chebbi, with no village at the edge of the dunes. The price is access: the last stretch from M'Hamid is a couple of hours of off-road piste by 4x4. On this loop you still leave Fes by the Midelt and Ziz road, then turn west at Errachidia for Todra and Dades, and reach the Draa valley and M'Hamid from Ouarzazate. Two nights at Touareg Dream Chigaga Luxury Camp or Erg Chigaga Mobile Camp replace the two Merzouga nights, and you usually give up Essaouira. Same route over 16 or 17 days, or 14 days with Chefchaouen or Essaouira dropped. We split the Fes to Merzouga day, add a second Dades night, cap driving at four or five hours, and choose hotels with lifts. How we pace it: Morocco tours for seniors.
Children do well on this loop if the long day is split and every afternoon has a pool. We shorten the Fes medina walk, keep the camel ride to 20 or 30 minutes, and give Essaouira's beach a full day. More on Morocco family tours.
If you are coming from Spain or through a European hub, start in Tangier instead: Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes, the desert, the gorges, Marrakech and Essaouira, then fly home from Casablanca. This route crosses mountains, desert and coast, so the season is a compromise. March to May and late September to November are the best of it. December to February is good too, with bright days, cold desert nights near freezing and occasional snow on the Tizi n'Tichka pass. From June to August the desert is routinely above 40°C by early afternoon and Marrakech and Fes are very hot; we run summer trips with early starts, long midday rests and the coast at the end, but we would not choose those months for you. Two weeks is enough to see the main regions of Morocco properly: the imperial cities, the Sahara, the southern gorges and kasbahs, Marrakech and the Atlantic coast. It allows two nights in Fes, the desert and Marrakech, only one very long driving day, and a free day. You will not see the far south or the Mediterranean coast, and that is fine.
The classic loop: Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes (two nights), Merzouga and Erg Chebbi (two nights), the Todra and Dades gorges, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, Marrakech (three nights), Essaouira and back to Casablanca. It follows the roads in one direction, with no backtracking, and puts the desert in the middle of the trip.

On a two-week trip, two nights at Merzouga: one in a hotel after the long drive from Fes, and one in a desert camp in the dunes after a slow day. That way you are not climbing onto a camel after eight hours in a car, and you see both sunset and sunrise over Erg Chebbi without rushing either.
From North America, Casablanca: it is where the nonstop flights land, and a loop through Rabat, the north, the desert and Marrakech brings you back there. Tangier works well if you are coming from Spain or through Europe. Starting in Marrakech usually means connecting in Europe and doing the loop backwards.
Yes, as the last stop before flying home. After the desert and the medinas, a night on the Atlantic with the harbour, the ramparts and fresh fish is the right way to slow down. It adds about three hours of driving from Marrakech. If you are short of time, it is the first stop we cut.
About 38 to 40 hours of driving across fourteen days on our route. Only one day, Fes to Merzouga, is long at 7 to 8 hours. Most driving days are 3 to 5 hours with stops built in, and four days have little or no driving at all.
You can, but June to August is the hardest season for this route. The desert passes 40°C by early afternoon and Marrakech and Fes are very hot. We plan summer trips with early starts, long midday breaks, pools, and the coast at the end. If your dates are flexible, choose spring or autumn instead.
